# Pause or enable a webhook

> Temporarily pause a receiver or enable a previously verified subscription without changing its URL or event selection. Requires `webhooks:manage`, using the credential that owns the subscription. Send only `{active:false}` or `{active:true}`; use PUT for configuration changes.

Enabling requires a successful receiver verification. Creating, reconfiguring or rotating the subscription clears verification, so run the verification endpoint before enabling after those actions. The response contains the current subscription details and never the signing secret. An in-flight request may still arrive after a pause. Queued deliveries encountered while inactive can become cancelled and need explicit replay later; a pause is not a guaranteed hold-and-resume queue. Continue to deduplicate events.

Persist an `Idempotency-Key` for this state change and reuse it only with the same request. `409 verification_required` means you must verify the receiver first. `404 not_found` means the subscription is absent or owned by another credential. A matching retry returns the saved response only after current access and verification checks. If rotation cleared verification after an enable succeeded, retrying that enable returns `409 verification_required`; deliberately reverify the receiver first.

See [receiver lifecycle](/guides/webhooks#register-and-verify-a-receiver).
